The staff at NTHS is eternally grateful for the hard work, perseverance, and effort all our Advisors pour into their roles as NTHS leadership, and into their students on a daily basis. We know that we literally could not continue our mission to honor high-achieving Career and Technical Education students all across the nation without their constant support and dedication.

But every once in a while, we’re just dazzled by an Advisor that truly goes above and beyond to engage and enrich their NTHS members… And these people are truly our shining stars!

So this month, we’d like to introduce you to our friend, Carla Yonk.

Carla has been an NTHS Advisor for 5 years, and she teaches business courses at South Forsyth High School.

We asked her a few questions so we could get to know her a little better…

How long have you been teaching, and what do you currently teach?

I have been teaching 9 years. I teach Business Educations courses (Accounting, HR Management, Entrepreneurship), and IB Business Management.

Why is Career and Technical Education important to you?

I believe CTE courses are important because they give students an opportunity to explore their talents and how those translate into a profession they will enjoy.

As the leader of your school’s NTHS chapter, what accomplishments (yours or your students’) are you most proud of?

We have doubled the size of the chapter in 5 years and participated in many community service events. Several students have earned NTHS scholarships.

Have you done any activities, projects, campaigns, and/or community outreach with your NTHS chapter that you feel were successful? Tell us about them!

We participate in collections of products needed by those in our community.  We also donate hundreds of hours to various organizations to help facilitate events.  We participated in Socktober and collected almost 700 pairs of socks for the Salvation Army.  We have also conducted Red Cross blood drives for the last three years and met the collection goal each time, which qualifies students for scholarships.

Tell us a little about you… Your family? Your pets? Your hobbies and interests?

Teaching is a second career for me after 20+ years in accounting, finance, and forecasting.  I am married and have two teenage daughters.  I love cats, going to the beach, hiking, and the Georgia Bulldogs.

Thank you for all you do, Carla!!!

If you know of an NTHS Advisor that you’d like to nominate to be featured as our Advisor of the Month, email tblack@nths.org and let us know!
