Begin preparing for National Internship Awareness Month - April!
April is National Internship Awareness Month and it is a great time to build in conversations and activities with your members about the benefits of and how to secure an internship.
Internships offer a great way to "try out" different professions to make informed future career decisions. In addition, internships provide employability skill experience and learning opportunities that you often cannot get anywhere else.
Here are some great conversation starters to have with your members at your next meeting and some resources to help them find an internship opportunity.
Conversation Starters
- What specific employability (or soft) skills can you learn during an internship?
- How will an internship help you make future career decisions? (Consider the type of workplace, industry, specific technical skills, interests, how you work with different types of people)
- Are internships only for the summer?
- Where do I start to find an internship?
Internship Resources
Tips to give your students for finding an internship:
- Start looking early - it may take a while to find the right fit. If you have a specific time period you are looking to complete your internship, begin searching 6-12 months beforehand
- Research local businesses and organizations online that relate to your specific interests and skills and send these companies a cover letter (in the form of an email), a copy of your resume, and a link to any relevant work/portfolio
- Typically, smaller local businesses are easier to find internships with than large or national organizations, but keep your options open
- Network within your current social circles (family, friends, religious organizations, extracurriculars, etc.) to make contacts to find an internship site - get creative. You never know who might give you a fantastic opportunity
- Understand that your first internship might be unpaid - and that's OK - your compensation is experience and knowledge
- Become an advocate for yourself and "sell" your skill sets

Last month, we asked our members and advisors to submit the different activities and projects that they completed during CTE Month. We had some amazing entries and want to show off some of our favorites while also putting together some friendly competition.
Our top 6 entries are all live on our Instagram right now for you to check out and decide which ones you think are the best, then you can "vote" by liking their specific Instagram post!
Whichever post has the most likes by the end will be our CTE March Madness winner and will receive an NTHS Tablecloth + $50 Gift Card!
Voting will be open until March 31st.

We would like to highlight Dr. Laura Leatherwood, NTHS Board of Directors President. Dr. Leatherwood was recently named the 2022 President of the Year by the State Board of Community Colleges for North Carolina. Dr. Leatherwood serves as the President of Blue Ridge Community College and was selected from 58 community colleges in the North Carolina system to receive this top honor.
“I very much consider this honor a recognition of the hard work and support of many individuals. Without the support and hard work of our County leaders, economic development and workforce partners, our donors, and our faculty and staff here at Blue Ridge, this recognition would not have been possible.” -Dr. Leatherwood
NTHS is exceptionally proud to have such an accomplished leader guiding our organization and helping us recognize excellence in Career and Technical Education.

More than 37 million Americans have participated in taking their kids to work with them. April 28, 2022 provides an incredible opportunity for parents and students during the "National Take Your Kids to Work" Day. Many schools even provide students with an excused absence for participating in this educational opportunity.
Why NTHS loves "Take Your Kids to Work" Day:
- It's an opportunity to strengthen family bonds and help students relate to adults in a new way
- It helps students understand the scope of work in a specific career and how work is completed in an organization
- It expands students' world or possibilities and presents the opportunity to think about their future careers
Advisors, consider taking these next steps to promote "National Take Your Kids to Work" day at your school:
- Talk to your school administration about the absence policies for "Take Your Kids to Work" Day and how to get the word out to students
- Encourage parents and students to participate in "Take Your Kids to Work" Day - send out emails/letters home and explain the school's policy for this educational opportunity.
- Encourage students to go with other relatives to their workplaces, if they more closely align to their skills and interests

All membership portfolio packets are sent directly to the advisors at the schools for distribution. The membership certificates must be signed by the advisor and the head of the school before presenting to the members.
Consider ordering graduation regalia for your students when you order the membership portfolio packets. Schools tend to receive regalia faster than residential addresses. That way, all items will be at the school and ready to give your members before induction ceremonies and graduations to avoid last-minute "order panic" (and higher shipping costs for second-day or next-day air).
If you wish to have members order their own regalia, please let them know in plenty of time what type and color is preferred; i.e., white satin stoles, purple and silver honor cords, etc. Members may go to www.nths.org, click on the "Shop" menu, select the items needed, and pay by credit card at checkout.
Both advisors and students need to ensure the shipping and billing addresses are correct at checkout. And, everyone needs to choose the “date needed” as the day they need their order delivered.
