NTHS National Office Staff CTSO Roots
February is national Career and Technical Education (CTE) month and all of the CTSOs take a week and celebrate their membership. It is a month that we celebrate with gusto here at the NTHS headquarters, as many of us are products of CTE and CTSOs.
Our founder, Jon H. Poteat, served as the South Carolina FFA State Reporter in 1959-60. He started us off with a culture of leadership and service.
Our current Executive Director, Peyton Holland, was a SkillsUSA State and National Officer from North Carolina and the State Director. He was also a member and local chapter officer for FFA.

Christina Councill, who serves as our Senior Engagement Director, was a SkillsUSA Chapter Advisor at Middle Creek High School in North Carolina. Our Chief Financial Officer, Christy Swift was a member of FCCLA in high school and Renee Frady, our Chapter Services Coordinator was in FBLA and DECA. Teresa Mankin who serves as our Engagement Program Manager was an FCCLA State Officer from Indiana and a member of BPA. She has also been the State Director for SkillsUSA and FCCLA in Oregon.
CTSOs and CTE are important to us because we know what these skills and organizations can do for students. We have seen it first hand.
CTE Month is a time to celebrate the life-changing opportunities CTE provides to students, adults and businesses. CTE equips learners with the skills they need to succeed in high-demand careers while driving economic growth in our country. This February, let’s recognize the impact of CTE and the dedicated professionals who make it all possible.

Mountain Heritage High Students
Build Hope After Disaster
Students from Mountain Heritage High School are making a remarkable impact in their community by turning their carpentry skills into life-changing work. After the devastating floods from Hurricane Helene left many homes destroyed, these students stepped up to help rebuild. Through the Cougar Carpenter Project, these talented young builders are constructing homes from the ground up for families who lost everything. Their dedication to both their craft and their community exemplifies the spirit of Career and Technical Education (CTE) in action—using real-world skills to make a meaningful difference.
Mountain Heritage High School has a strong history of recognizing outstanding CTE students through their active NTHS chapter, and it’s inspiring to see carpentry students continue to set such a high standard of leadership and service. These students aren’t just learning how to build homes—they’re building hope for their neighbors and showcasing the true power of CTE. February Honor Roll: Sherita Harmon
Health science students at the Marshall Center for Advanced Careers in Texas have a fierce advocate in their corner: Sherita Harmon. Sherita has been teaching for ten years and serving as an NTHS advisor for five.
During that time, she has seen firsthand that Career and Technical Education (CTE) is a vital part of preparing students for their futures. It equips them with practical skills, industry knowledge, and hands-on experiences that make them competitive in the workforce and ready for post-secondary success.
“For me,” she said, “CTE is personal because I’ve seen how it changes lives. It opens doors for students who may not see themselves on traditional college paths and provides them with the tools to build confidence, independence, and a successful career.”
